QR code and security: how safe are they?

Apr 4, 2023

With companies trying to protect the authenticity of their products and the legacy of the brand, there is a huge spotlight on ways to identify the fake products circulating. The counterfeit market is at an all-time high and while we create more innovative ways to trace and weed our fake products, they figure out ways to counter that. There are a lot of anti-counterfeit measures out there and picking the right ones and syncing them so that their best traits are at play is very important.

QR codes or Quick Response Codes, have become very popular these days because of their ease of use. It can retain vast amounts of information in a small space a, therefore, is used everywhere in all products. But how safe are QR codes exactly?

QR codes themselves are not inherently unsafe. They are simply a way of encoding information in a specific format that can be read by a QR code reader. The real problem often is how the information contained in the QR code is being used and whether it is secure. One potential risk with QR codes is that they can be used to direct users to malicious websites. Hackers can create QR codes that look legitimate but actually redirect the user to a website that contains malware or phishing scams. These types of attacks are becoming increasingly common and are often used to steal sensitive information such as login credentials or credit card numbers. To protect against this type of attack, it is important to only scan QR codes from trusted sources. If you receive a QR code from an unknown source or one that looks suspicious, it is best to avoid scanning it altogether.

QR codes can also be used to steal sensitive information from mobile devices. Hackers can create QR codes that contain malicious code that can be used to exploit vulnerabilities in the user’s device. To protect against this type of attack, it is important to keep your mobile device updated with the latest security patches and to use a reputable antivirus app. Tracking and tracing QR codes makes it easier for companies to identify which QR code of which particular product has been tampered with. The ability to trace helps us get info about the state of the QR code like when where and what phone scanned it at what time.

In conclusion, while QR codes themselves are not inherently unsafe, they can be used in a variety of ways to exploit vulnerabilities and steal sensitive information. To stay safe when using QR codes, it is important to only scan codes from trusted sources, be cautious about the information you provide, and keep your mobile device updated with the latest security patches.
